Understanding The Memory You Need In Your Laptop Computer

|
When looking for a new computer one of the points always presented is the amount of memory it has. Users need to understand that there are two different types of memory and how much of either type will be needed in a laptop depends on how the computer is going to be used.
Every computer has a built in memory system called a hard drive that stores program information as well as user information inside files imbedded on the hard drive. As a basic for understanding, a keystroke on the keyboard puts approximately one byte into the computer’s random access memory, or RAM as it is called, and in most cases a laptop comes equipped with 256 megabytes of RAM.
That may sound like a lot of information, but considering many of today’s computer programs, especially graphic-intensive games often need at least 512 megabytes of RAM just to operate, the 256 meg systems will probably need upgraded unless the laptop is going to be used for email, the occasional letter and for surfing harmlessly on the internet. Downloading pictures also requires a lot of RAM memory as do playing internet games.
The storage capacity of the hard drive is important to understand if there are several programs planned to be stored on the computer. With today’s systems, it is common to find computers with a hard drive of 40, 50 and even 60 Megabyte storage capacity. If the size of many of the programs is considered, it will not take long before this seemingly endless supply of free space is filled with information.
Additionally a computer with a hard drive of 100 megabytes cannot hold that much as some of that space is already used by the programs pre-installed on many of the programs. Additionally, some computers used a portion of the hard drive for recovery programs where everything is backed up in case of a failure.
Random access memory also uses part of the available resources for sound in what is called shared access. When the RAM memory is shared by the audio card and program, it can use up some of the RAM expected to be used to run programs. In this case a computer equipped with 256 megabyte of RAM memory may have trouble running a program that requires that same amount to function, since the sound or graphics cards is stealing some of that available space away.
How much each person needs is based on the type of programs they plan to run, the amount of graphics and sound included in those programs and whether they want to keep the programs and any related information on the hard drive. As a rule of thumb, a minimum of 512 megabyte of RAM and a 100 megabyte hard drive will probably meet the needs of a majority of laptop computer users.
