If you have every been working on a project on your laptop computer and have the battery start to die just before you get finished, your immediate concern is to save the file before the information you have already entered fades into the cyber netherland. It’s a good bet that the power cord is either in your car or somewhere other than where you and the computer are sitting.
Several laptop users have found that a spare battery can come in pretty handy, allowing one to be used while the other is charging. When the one being used begins to show a diminished charge, it’s a simple matter to save the work, quickly change batteries and get back to it. In some cases, once a battery totally loses its charge it may never fully recover, decreasing the chance that it can reach its full charge capability in the future. Also, some batteries have an annoying property called a memory.
Batteries with a memory, once fully charged the first time must be expended until almost completely dry before being recharged or the user risks it not fully charging the next time. For example, if the battery is only half gone when it is plugged onto the charger, it will read that it only required half a charge to be full. The next time it is put on the charger, even if more than three-fourths gone, it will only charge half-way, as that is what remains in its memory.
Having a spare battery allows the user to allow it to go almost completely dead before putting on charge and using the spare battery saves the time from having to wait for it to complete the charging cycle or the expense of having to replace it with a new one with a better memory.
So many people use their laptop in internet cafes that may not be inductive to having an outlet for plugging the laptop in. When the battery starts to die, the user is pretty much done for the day unless they have a spare. Otherwise they will trying to find a place to plug the computer in or heading back home to charge their existing battery. In business, a lull in communications may mean the difference between getting a sale and getting replaced.
Laptop batteries are not cheap and having a spare may spare may seem like an unnecessary expense. But like all electronic devices, batteries can go bad. In most instances they can be replaced during the warranty period for no charge, but what you do with the computer while waiting for a replacement can cost time and money. It may end up being cheaper to buy a spare before you need it, than wait until it goes bad and needs replaced.
